Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker is being hailed as a “hero” for aiding teammate BJ Thompson during a medical emergency at practice on Thursday.

BJ Thompson, 25, suffered cardiac arrest and a seizure during practice. He was hospitalized and is now in stable condition. His agent, Chris Turnage, reported that Thompson is “awake and responsive,” according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Butker quickly alerted team trainers, ensuring Thompson received prompt medical attention.

Chiefs head athletic trainer Rick Burkholder stated that while there’s no diagnosis yet, Thompson is “coming along quite well” and “heading in the right direction.”

Fans are praising Butker for his quick actions. Previously, Butker faced backlash for homophobic, antisemitic, misogynistic, and sexist comments made during a commencement speech at Benedictine College. Despite calls for his release, Butker stood by his comments, with teammate Patrick Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid defending him, though Mahomes did not agree with all of Butker’s statements.
