Angel Reese’s mother denied speculation that her daughter had mocked Caitlin Clark in a social media post late last week, and she accused online trolls of sending the Chicago Sky forward “racist and vile comments.”
The No. 7 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft played her part in her new team’s 90-81 win over the New York Liberty, contributing 13 points and nine rebounds last Thursday night. The LSU college basketball icon has made a stunning start to life in Illinois, with the team starting at .500 through four contests after being widely picked to finish near the bottom of the standings.
After the Liberty upset, Reese was accused of making a thinly-veiled comment at the expense of former NCAA rival Clark. The Iowa legend has experienced a tough start to life after being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the draft by the Indiana Fever.
Taking to Twitter/X, Reese’s comments to her 490,000 followers led to some observers reading between the lines. In a now-deleted post, which included a kiss emoji at the end, she said: “And that’s on getting a WIN in a packed area not just ’cause of one player on our charter flight.”
The Fever began the season 0-5 before Clark and Co. finally experienced victory against the Los Angeles Sparks. That 78-73 win in Southern California came as Clark contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Now, Reese’s mother has cleared up the controversy as she claimed that her daughter’s comments had been misinterpreted. On Twitter/X, she said: “She was not attacking CC [Caitlin Clark] but [because] you and the rest of those ‘children of the corn’ folks thought she was and once again sending her racist and vile comments she did. Her comment was directed towards the media but of course you’re about clicks.”

This also came after Reese’s comments about the rising popularity of women’s college basketball as she drew attention to the impact of stars other than Clark. She said: “It’s not just one person, I think people don’t realize that (because) the narrative out there is that just one person changing the game.”
“It’s a lot of us — me, Kamilla (Cardoso), there’s Cameron (Brink), Rickea (Jackson). There’s so many great players and it’s been long overdue and just being able to see that our impact has been able to change the game. I love it for us all, and we’re just going to continue to keep going.”
As for Clark, she admitted that she had felt the pressure of the glare of the intense spotlight during the early weeks of her WNBA career. After recording her first win with the Fever she told KCAL News’ Chris Hayre: “Our team is really young. It’s difficult navigating this. I absolutely love it and wouldn’t change it for the world, but I think just getting off social media has been the healthiest thing.”
The Indiana rookie added: “This is my job. This is what I love to do. I never want to lose the fun of the game. Nights like tonight just remind of why I love playing basketball and why I started playing basketball.
“You get a win, and then you walk off the floor and there are so many young kids just screaming your name. I think it’s the little things that remind me every single day why I do this and why I love it.”
