Efforts to bring the Kansas City Chiefs to Kansas have gained momentum after Jackson County voters rejected an extension of a stadium sales tax intended for renovations at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

Following the tax rejection, the Kansas Legislature discussed a STAR Bonds proposal to build a new stadium, aiming to entice the Chiefs to move to Kansas City, Kansas, according to KMBC. To rally support, Scoop and Score, Inc. launched a website encouraging Kansans to back the STAR Bond initiative. The website features a petition for supporters to sign.

The website states:

“The Professional Sports Franchise STAR Bond Project seizes a unique opportunity to elevate Kansas into a top-tier destination for professional sports. With the potential for a substantial return on investment without any new cost to taxpayers, it promises to be a game-changer for our state’s economy.”

Although the Kansas Conference Committee on Senate and House Commerce began working on a bill, it has not yet been approved. The special session is set to begin on June 18.

Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson and Speaker Dan Hawkins have reached out to Chiefs owner Clark Hunt, inviting him to collaborate on the potential stadium project. They released the following statement:

“The rich tradition and history of the Chiefs are beloved across the entire Kansas City region and throughout Kansas. The potential to establish a home for the Chiefs family here on the Kansas side of the state line is an opportunity that deserves a thorough conversation. We have reached out to the Chiefs organization and asked them to weigh in on the possibility of using Kansas’ unique STAR Bond funding tool and explore what that collaboration could hold. We’re excited that the Chiefs are open to this conversation and look forward to seeing what mutually beneficial opportunities might lie ahead for both the people of Kansas and the Chiefs franchise.”
