Prince William came face to face on Thursday with a European royal who had previously made a public joke about Princess Kate’s Photoshop scandal, which occurred shortly before her cancer announcement.
William attended the international commemorative ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach in France, joining world leaders such as President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron. King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands were also in attendance.
Video footage showed William speaking with the Dutch royals. In March, King Willem-Alexander made headlines for joking about Photoshopped family portraits amid Kate’s image-manipulation scandal. The controversy began when Kensington Palace released a Mother’s Day portrait of Kate and her children, which social-media users quickly identified as edited. This led to widespread speculation and picture agencies recalling the image.
Four days later, King Willem-Alexander joked about Photoshopped pictures during a visit to Zutphen, drawing laughter from nearby parents. Kate’s public scrutiny increased until she revealed on March 22 that she had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing preventive chemotherapy. She emphasized the need for privacy during her treatment.

Several celebrities, including Lively and Andy Cohen, later expressed regret for joking about Kate during the Photoshop controversy.
Kate did not accompany William to the D-Day commemoration as she continues her treatment. Kensington Palace has not provided a timeline for her return to public duties, but William mentioned on June 5 that she is “getting better.”
