Amidst his cancer treatment, the King attended a gala at the Royal Opera House honoring Sir Antonio Pappano, who concluded his 22-year tenure as music director of The Royal Opera. Charles, expressing he felt “not too bad” after the performance, engaged in reminiscences with Sir Antonio since last May’s coronation.

Sir Antonio commended Charles for his genuine appreciation of music and their collaborative history. Despite performers learning of Charles’s attendance just 20 minutes before going on stage, they delivered an outstanding performance, earning a standing ovation. Opera tenor Freddie De Tommaso described the event as exhilarating, highlighting the joy of performing for the King.

Mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina expressed gratitude for Charles’s presence and encouragement. Sir Antonio, recognized for his contributions, was honored with appointments as Commander of the Royal Victorian Order and winning his second Olivier Award.
