A crew member on the DALI cargo ship sent a message hours after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed Tuesday saying everybody on board was safe, according to Apostleship of the Sea director Andy Middleton.
Middleton, who spent time with the captain of the DALI Monday, told CNN’s Laura Coates he reached out to a crew member after hearing about the incident Tuesday morning.
Six people, who were believed to be part of a road construction crew, are presumed dead after Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed early Tuesday morning. The collapse came after a 984-foot cargo ship hit the bridge’s pillar.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore told reporters Tuesday evening it’s a “really heartbreaking conclusion to a challenging day.”
Three separate investigations are currently underway on Monday to determine accountability for the tragic Baltimore bridge collapse, which claimed the lives of six individuals, caused significant damage to a major roadway, and severely impacted the local economy.
Authorities have confirmed the recovery of a fourth victim’s body on Monday, though the identity has not been disclosed out of respect for the family’s wishes.
In addition to a federal criminal investigation, both the city authorities and legal representatives for multiple victims are actively pursuing avenues of accountability, particularly in light of recent efforts by the ship’s owner and manager to limit their financial liability through legal maneuvers.
The catastrophic collapse occurred around 1:30 a.m. on March 26 when a large cargo vessel, the Dali, experienced a power failure, deviated from its intended course, and collided with the bridge structure. Tragically, six construction workers who were conducting repairs on the bridge at the time fell into the Patapsco River and lost their lives. Despite nearly three weeks passing since the incident, the bodies of two workers remain missing.
