Buckingham Palace Announces King Charles III’s Cancer Diagnosis
Buckingham Palace revealed on February 5th that King Charles III of the United Kingdom has been diagnosed with cancer and is commencing treatment.
“Diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer,” the palace stated in a release.
Less than 18 months into his reign, the 75-year-old monarch will temporarily suspend public engagements but will continue to carry out state business and will not abdicate his constitutional roles as head of state.
The palace did not disclose the type of cancer the king is facing, but stated that it is unrelated to his recent treatment for benign prostate enlargement, which saw him hospitalized in London for three nights. The king is currently undergoing treatment as an outpatient.
The palace further noted that the king “has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope that it might help the public better understand everyone affected by cancer worldwide.”
Charles ascended to the throne in September 2022 following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, at the age of 96 after a 70-year reign.
The king’s daughter-in-law, Kate, the Duchess of Wales, has also recently recovered from abdominal surgery that necessitated a two-week hospital stay.
Her husband, Prince William, the heir apparent, has taken time to care for their three children but will preside over investitures at Buckingham Palace and attend a charity dinner on Wednesday.
The king personally called his children to share news of his health.
Political leaders in the UK have sent messages of support. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak tweeted, “Wishing the king a full and speedy recovery. I’m confident he’ll be back to full health soon, and I know the whole country will wish him well.”
US President Joe Biden, on a trip to Las Vegas on Monday, said he had just learned of Charles’s diagnosis and expressed hope of speaking with him. “I’m concerned about him,” Biden told reporters.
The president later posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Navigating cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survival requires absolute hope and courage. Jill and I join the people of the United Kingdom in praying for the king’s swift and full recovery.”
