Lone Star Ballet concludes its 2023-24 season with the renowned Shakespearean comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” this upcoming weekend. The performances are scheduled at the Globe-News Center for Performing Arts on Friday and Saturday, April 12th and 13th.
In this ballet adaptation of William Shakespeare’s play, the narrative unfolds with a dispute between the fairy Queen Titania and King Oberon over a “changeling.” Oberon, aided by his loyal servant Puck, devises a plan to trick Titania into relinquishing the young creature. However, Oberon’s scheme is interrupted when he encounters four humans entangled in a love quadrangle as they traverse the Fae woods while fleeing from Athens. Seeking revenge, Oberon instructs Puck to administer a love potion to the humans, leading to a comedic mix-up of emotions and a test of true love. “This season has had a literary theme, featuring Edgar Allan Poe, ‘The Nutcracker,’ and now Shakespeare. While Shakespeare can be intimidating, this piece is one of his more comedic love stories, making it easily accessible,” remarked Roxanne Seaton, Ballet Mistress.
“It promises to be an intriguing performance; it’s not a solemn piece. We’ve opted for drops instead of projections, as most of the action unfolds in a forest. Combined with makeup, costumes, and lighting, it’s bound to be a spectacle,” Seaton continued. Emily Evans, who portrays Titania and serves as an LSB dance instructor, noted that despite the title’s reference to midsummer, the production exudes a spring-like atmosphere.
“Although titled ‘Midsummer Night’s Dream,’ the show embodies the essence of spring. Throughout, there’s a sense of renewal and revival, much like spring. For us dancers, it signifies emerging from hibernation post-‘The Nutcracker’ and presenting the final show of our season, akin to spring flowers blossoming,” Evans shared. While the production marks the season’s finale for the audience, some LSB dancers view it as their swan song, potentially marking their last ballet performance ever.
High school senior Cambree Hutcherson, portraying the Mustard Seed Fairy Attendant, expressed mixed emotions about embarking on a new life chapter after graduation while bidding adieu to the stage and her “second home” at LSB, where she has spent over a decade.
“This show is both exhilarating and bittersweet for me. It’s likely my final performance, and while I’m excited for what lies ahead, I’ll miss this immensely,” Hutcherson remarked. “LSB has become a sanctuary for me—a place where I’ve forged friendships and found unwavering support. It’s been my haven, and I’m grateful for every moment,” she added.
LSB’s rendition of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” promises enchanting floral vistas, intricate choreography, and abundant laughter. Showtimes are Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 3 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase online at panhandletickets.com or by calling (806) 378-3096.
