On Wednesday evening, law enforcement agencies across at least four states reported interruptions in 911 service. Later, service was restored in some areas.
Officials in South Dakota, Texas, Nebraska, and Nevada reported outages in various cities, though the specific causes were not immediately clear.
The South Dakota Department of Public Safety acknowledged a “911 service interruption” across the state in a statement. Later, the department announced that the 911 system in South Dakota was back up and running.
“Our emergency system is fully operational and ready to respond quickly to any situation,” the department posted on Facebook. “Your safety is our priority, and we are here to ensure help is just a call away whenever you need it.”
The department also stated, “Efforts are underway to resolve the issue.”
Officials in Sioux Falls and Rapid City reported their 911 services were restored, as shared on their Facebook pages. The Rapid City Police Department reminded residents to use 911 only in emergency situations. The City of Sioux Falls confirmed residents could once again call or text 911 during emergencies.
In Texas, the City of Del Rio Police Department noted an outage with a “major cellular carrier” impacting residents’ ability to contact 911. The department emphasized, “The issue is with the carrier, not the City of Del Rio systems.”
“Our emergency services remain functional,” the police department stated. “If you can’t reach 911 on your mobile device, please use a landline or another carrier. We are actively monitoring the situation and will provide updates as needed.”
Parts of Nebraska, including Chase County, also experienced outages. However, officials in Lincoln, the state capital, confirmed their 911 system remained operational and unaffected.
Chase County said in a Facebook post, “911 is down across Nebraska for all cellular carriers except T-Mobile. Landlines can still reach 911.”
The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department initially reported similar outage issues without a set timeline for resolution. Two hours later, they confirmed 911 service was restored but didn’t specify the reason for the outage or how restoration occurred.
“Dial 911 on a mobile device, and we’ll see your number and call you back immediately. 911 calls from landlines are not working right now,” the department initially posted on Facebook. “There’s no estimate for service restoration.”
During the outage, residents could text 911 instead and were advised to keep the 911 system available for emergencies.
“9-1-1 phone service has been restored,” the department said later on Wednesday night. “All individuals who called during the outage have been called back and assisted. Non-emergency calls are also functional. Please only call 9-1-1 for emergencies.”
