Many Democratic House members are willing to support Speaker of the House Mike Johnson after some Republican members threatened to overthrow him.
Democratic Representative Jared Moskowitz in the House stated on April 21 that overthrowing Speaker of the House Mike Johnson at this time would only encourage America’s adversaries during a global turmoil.
Democratic Representative Ro Khanna on the same day declared his opposition to the impeachment of Speaker of the House Johnson, asserting that Johnson “deserves to hold the position until the end of his term.”
The support from the Democratic Party could thwart efforts to overthrow Speaker of the House Johnson, a member of the Republican Party.
Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene earlier this month warned of submitting a motion to impeach the Speaker of the House if he allowed the passage of the Ukraine aid bill. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a $95 billion foreign aid bill on April 20, including nearly $61 billion for Ukraine.
Greene then called for Johnson’s resignation, accusing him of “working for the Democratic Party.” The Republican congresswoman affirmed that she would submit a motion to impeach Johnson regardless of his decision.
However, many Republican members still support Speaker Johnson. Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee Michael McCaul stated that he would support Johnson for acting correctly.
Former President Donald Trump, who still holds influence in the Republican Party, also expressed support for Speaker Johnson, saying that he had done a good job during difficult times.
Under rules passed early last year, any member can bring a motion to remove the Speaker, and the body must vote on the proposal within two days. Johnson will need at least 218 votes out of 435 representatives to retain his position.
Johnson, 52, was elected as the 56th Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in October 2023, ending three weeks of turmoil after his predecessor Kevin McCarthy was impeached.
