Courtney Love is currently promoting her new film “Courtney Love’s Women.” In this film, the ex-wife of Kurt Cobain talks about various women in the music industry – those who are believed to have shaped her career.
In an interview published by Standard Monday, the 59-year-old singer said she “absolutely detests” the idea of Taylor Swift.
“Taylor is not important,” Courtney Love said about the 14-time Grammy winner. “Taylor is not relevant at all. She may be a safe space for girls and maybe she’s the current Madonna, but as an artist, she’s not interesting.”
Love’s comments immediately drew backlash from Taylor Swift fans. Many pointed out that Love seemed to have once admired Taylor Swift to the extent of sending her birthday wishes on Facebook just a few years ago. At that time, the 59-year-old former singer wrote, “Happy belated birthday @taylorswift, a towering role model for many young women…” Love posted this birthday wish in December 2021 along with a photo of the two.
However, in this interview, Courtney Love not only criticized the “Anti-Hero” singer, but she also didn’t hesitate to mention Lana Del Rey – whom she said “really should take a seven-year vacation.”
Courtney Love also mentioned that she doesn’t “like” Madonna and then took one final jab at Beyoncé – who recently became the first Black woman to top the Country Albums chart with the release of “Cowboy Carter.” Love said, “I just don’t like her music.”
After Courtney Love’s comments, fans from various places took to Twitter to criticize Love for “publicly tearing down fellow female artists” while promoting a series of films that are supposed to be about the importance of women in music.
“In 100 years, the name Courtney Love won’t mean anything,” one fan wrote, “No one will know who she is. But when Taylor Swift is mentioned, people will remember how she could connect with millions through her music, cherish her fans, and fight for artists’ rights.”
Currently, all the artists mentioned by Courtney Love in her speech have yet to respond to her criticisms.
