The Princess of Wales has apologized to the Irish Guards for missing today’s Trooping the Colour event in a letter read to the regiment.

A letter from Her Royal Highness, The Princess of Wales

Princess Kate took over as colonel from her husband, Prince William, last year. Today’s Colonel’s Review at Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall, London, was part of the Trooping the Colour events.

Due to ongoing cancer treatment, Kate could not attend and inspect the troops as usual. In her heartfelt letter, she expressed her regret and pride in the regiment. The letter, shared on the Irish Guards’ Twitter account, reads:

“I wanted to let you know how proud I am of the entire regiment ahead of the Colonel’s Review and Trooping the Colour. I appreciate the months of practice and dedication. Being your colonel remains an honour, and I am very sorry that I’m unable to make the salute this year. Please pass on my apologies to the whole regiment. I hope to represent you all once again very soon.”
