‘My sons absolutely hated ‘Barbie,’ Shakira said in a new interview and believes in ‘giving women’ the ‘tools’ to feel empowered ‘without losing our femininity.’
Despite the widespread adoration for the Barbie movie released last year, Shakira’s sons, Sasha and Milan, don’t share the same enthusiasm. The 47-year-old “Waka Waka” artist revealed in a recent interview that her sons, whom she shares with ex Gerard Piqué, “hated” the film starring Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.
Speaking to Allure, Shakira expressed her sons’ feelings toward the movie, noting that they found it “emasculating.” She added, “I agree, to a certain extent. I’m raising two boys. I want them to feel powerful too, while also respecting women.”
Shakira emphasized her belief in pop culture’s ability to empower women without diminishing men’s roles. She emphasized the importance of maintaining balance, stating, “I like pop culture when it attempts to empower women without robbing men of their possibility to be men, to also protect and provide.”
The music artist further elaborated on her views, highlighting the complementary nature of gender roles in society. She stressed the significance of women being equipped to handle various roles without losing their femininity, while also recognizing the purpose men serve in society. Ultimately, Shakira believes in the mutual support and collaboration between genders, emphasizing the importance of maintaining this balance in empowering both men and women.
Shakira gives her opinion on the ‘Barbie’ movie to Allure:
“My sons absolutely hated it. They felt that it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I'm raising two boys. I want ‘em to feel powerful too [while] respecting women. I like pop culture when it attempts to…
