DES MOINES, Iowa — Caitlin Clark, the two-time NCAA player of the year and No. 1 pick in this spring’s WNBA draft, will not be on Team USA’s Olympic roster this summer, according to a report by The Athletic.
Clark led Iowa to back-to-back NCAA title games before being selected by Indiana in the draft. She was named WNBA Rookie of the Month for May. Through the first month of regular season games, Clark led all 2024 rookies in scoring with 17.6 ppg.
The Athletic cites “sources briefed on the decision,” reporting USA Today columnist Christine Brennan confirms.

Brennan called Team USA leaving Clark off the roster a “missed opportunity,” and quoted basketball legend Lisa Leslie, saying, “I don’t know how you leave the country without her.”
Clark became just the third player in WNBA history, joining Candace Parker and Sabrina Ionescu, with 100+ points, 30+ rebounds and 30+ assists in her first six career games. On May 28, Clark’s first 30-point scoring effort against the Los Angeles Sparks was the 27th time a Fever player scored more than 30 points in a regular season game.
She made seven 3-pointers, equaled a career high with 30 points and made enough of her free throws down the stretch to help the Indiana Fever hold on for an 85-83 victory over the winless Washington Mystics on Friday.
According to data from Across the Timeline, the Indiana Fever are leading the league — by a wide margin — in both overall and average attendance. The Fever have brought in 82,857 fans to their five home games so far for an average of 16,571 fans per game.
Those 82,000-plus total fans have already broken last year’s total home attendance in Indiana. The Fever hosted 81,336 fans across 20 home games in 2023, according to Across the Timeline.
The U.S. women have won every gold medal in women’s basketball since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
The U.S. team will train together for a few days in Phoenix in July. Then its off to London for an exhibition game against Germany before heading to France.
The Americans will play Japan, Belgium and Germany in pool play at the Olympics.
