William, 41, joined King Charles and Queen Camilla at the event in Portsmouth. After delivering a heartfelt speech to veterans and politicians, he met with the public, including a war hero who inquired about his wife amid her cancer treatment. William assured him she was improving and mentioned she would have loved to be there.

William shared how Kate’s grandmother, Valerie Middleton, served as a codebreaker at Bletchley Park, similar to some of the women he met. He recalled, “My wife’s grandmother did the same sort of thing as you.”

Valerie and her twin sister Mary worked on cracking the German Enigma machine, contributing to Britain’s WWII efforts. Valerie was so sworn to secrecy that she never discussed her work, even with her family.

Queen Camilla was moved to tears by a D-Day veteran’s account of losing his best friend on Utah Beach, while King Charles appeared visibly affected. The event, hosted by Dame Helen Mirren, featured veterans’ stories and wartime songs.
