In Gwinnett County, Georgia, a man was fatally shot during a confrontation with police officers on Thursday evening. The incident unfolded around 6:30 p.m. when an officer, investigating a robbery, attempted to stop a red SUV in the parking lot of a Waffle House on Jimmy Carter Blvd., close to Peachtree Industrial Blvd. in unincorporated Norcross.
The Gwinnett Police Department reported that the driver of the SUV was wanted on four outstanding warrants in Hall County and was suspected of involvement in a separate robbery in unincorporated Gwinnett County. Initially compliant, the driver pulled over but then disregarded the officer’s commands to exit the vehicle, choosing instead to accelerate and open fire.
The situation escalated rapidly as the driver shot at a detective in an unmarked police vehicle nearby, who had turned on his blue lights. The bullet entered the trunk of the unmarked car, passed through the back seat, and lodged in the driver’s seat.
A high-speed chase ensued along Jimmy Carter Blvd. During the chase, police performed a PIT maneuver to stop the fleeing SUV. The confrontation culminated in an exchange of gunfire between the police and the suspect.
A witness at the scene described a dramatic shootout: “The guy reached out the window and shot the gun boom boom boom. And then he pulled off like all you heard was tires,” recounted Nelson. “Then they jumped out of the car and had a little back-and-forth shootout.”
The suspect was killed during this shootout. In the aftermath, Jimmy Carter Boulevard and the surrounding area, including the Waffle House parking lot, were closed to facilitate an ongoing police investigation. Channel 2’s Michael Doudna reported live from the scene, capturing the tense atmosphere and the community’s reaction to the violent clash.
