Hailey Van Lith’s decision to enter the NCAA Transfer Portal after just one season in Baton Rouge signals her readiness to explore new opportunities for the 2024 season. This move marks her second time in the portal, having previously transferred from the Louisville Cardinals to LSU.
A top contender for Van Lith’s talents has emerged: the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The program, led by head coach Sam Purcell, who previously coached Van Lith during her two years at Louisville, is keen to recruit her to their roster. Purcell’s familiarity with Van Lith and their existing relationship make Mississippi State an attractive destination for the talented player.
Van Lith had nothing but good things to say about Purcell when asked about his hire in 2022:
“Yeah, he’s my guy, man. Everyone on the team knows that’s my coach. And we’re really close, and we have a great relationship. And he treats me like family. And he puts up with me when I want to work out all the time and rebounds for me and all that.
I’m going to miss him a lot, but it’s his time, and he’s worked really hard for this, and he deserves this opportunity. I’ll clap for him, and I’ll keep up, and we’ll keep our relationship, but it’s time for him to take the next step.”
The Mississippi State Bulldogs Want Hailey Van Lith
Rumors have been circulating that Hailey Van Lith could be headed to Mississippi State, generating considerable excitement. According to Sports Illustrated, discussions with sources familiar with her recruitment suggest that there is some momentum in this direction.
However, it’s important to note that nothing is confirmed, as Van Lith is also being pursued by several other programs. Mississippi State’s interest in her is understandable, especially given the connection with head coach Sam Purcell. Purcell previously served as an assistant coach at Louisville while Van Lith was with the Cardinals. With Mississippi State aiming to improve on their seventh-place finish in the conference during the 2023-24 season, Van Lith’s potential addition could be a significant boost for the program.
