In Game 1 of the 2024 NBA Playoffs, the Los Angeles Lakers witnessed an early lead dissipate, ultimately falling behind the Denver Nuggets by double digits. The Nuggets secured a 114-103 victory over the Lakers in their first-round series, with Nikola Jokic leading the charge with 32 points and 12 rebounds. This win marked the commencement of the Nuggets’ NBA title defense.
Jamal Murray played a pivotal role for Denver, tallying 22 points and ten assists, guiding the team to its ninth consecutive victory over the Lakers and its fifth consecutive postseason win. Additionally, Aaron Gordon contributed 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Michael Porter Jr. added 19 points, as reported by the NBA website.

LeBron James quietly amassed 27 points during the fourth quarter, while Anthony Davis led the Lakers with an impressive performance of 32 points, 14 rebounds, and four blocked shots. Despite James’ contribution, he only scored four points in the final twelve minutes of play and didn’t attempt a shot until 1:20 remained in the game.
The Nuggets gained the upper hand with a dominant third quarter performance. Denver seized their first lead since the opening two minutes of the game, reaching 72-71, courtesy of a 3-pointer from Porter halfway through the quarter. From there, the Nuggets maintained control and continued their dominance on the court.
Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets Had a Dominating Third Quarter
A third-quarter meltdown proved costly for the Lakers after their promising start. Despite leading by three points at halftime, the Lakers faltered in the third quarter as the Nuggets, led by Nikola Jokic, outscored them 32–18, establishing a commanding lead heading into the fourth. Although the Lakers mounted a late comeback, narrowing the deficit to single digits midway through the final quarter, Denver ultimately emerged victorious.
Moving forward, the Lakers will need increased contributions from their bench players to challenge the reigning champions. Game Two of the series between the Lakers and Nuggets is set for Monday at 10 p.m. ET.
In their analysis, the Lakers identified turnovers and offensive rebounds as key areas for improvement. The Lakers caused eight more turnovers than the Nuggets but struggled with nine fewer offensive rebounds, resulting in a 21-point deficit in three-pointers and 17 additional shot attempts for Denver. While contending with Nikola Jokic’s dominance on the offensive glass may be challenging, the Lakers must focus on improving their long-range shooting and ball security to level the series.
