Eminem’s life has been a whirlwind of fame, addiction, and recovery. The rapper, who has battled drug abuse for years, once weighed over 230 pounds and was facing a potential relapse after a near-fatal overdose in 2007. But then he found a new addiction: running.
In an interview with Men’s Journal, Eminem revealed how running became his lifeline, helping him overcome addiction and regain control of his life. He started by running 9 miles before going to the studio, and gradually increased his mileage to over 17 miles a day on the treadmill. He became obsessed with burning 2,000 calories a day, pushing himself to maintain his grueling regimen.
“I became a running maniac on my machine,” Eminem described.
The intense exercise paid off. Eminem shed an incredible 82 pounds, dropping down to a healthy 150 pounds. However, the excessive training also took its toll, causing him to suffer from hip injuries. After recovering, the rapper had to switch from running to more targeted bodyweight exercises.
“It was so hard, the first time I did legs I couldn’t walk for two days,” Eminem recalled.
Today, Eminem has incorporated a balanced exercise routine into his daily life, focusing on smaller, targeted workouts for his legs, arms, and chest. He also keeps himself busy with work to avoid falling back into old habits.
“If I have a week off after a busy schedule, I’m scared I’ll go back to my old ways. Once you start something and see results, you don’t want to give it up and start over,” he shared.
Eminem’s story is a testament to the power of self-determination and the transformative potential of exercise. From the depths of addiction, he has emerged as a fitness enthusiast and a role model for those struggling with their own demons. His journey is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope for recovery and rediscovery.
