LOS ANGELES (AP) — During a prestigious pre-Grammy event in Los Angeles, Lil Wayne was celebrated for his musical accomplishments and took a moment to reflect on the lack of recognition he has received throughout his career.
“I don’t get honored,” remarked Lil Wayne on Thursday night at the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective event, where he, Dr. Dre, and Missy Elliott were bestowed with the Dr. Dre Global Impact Award. This renamed award recognizes their exceptional contributions to the music industry, both personally and professionally.
DJ Khaled had the honor of presenting Lil Wayne with the award, sharing a warm embrace, while heartfelt video messages from Drake and Deion Sanders paid tribute to the influential rapper. Additionally, Swizz Beatz, 2 Chainz, and Tyga performed some of Lil Wayne’s greatest hits during the ceremony.
In his acceptance speech, Lil Wayne opened up about the weight of adult responsibilities placed upon him at a tender age. He recalled signing his first record deal with Cash Money at just 12 years old and expressed gratitude towards his mother, the mothers of his children, and his own kids.
“Where I’m from, New Orleans, you’re not supposed to do this,” shared the five-time Grammy winner, garnering cheers from the audience at the Hollywood Palladium. “When I was 14, I walked into my mom’s room and she asked me for a kid, because my dad had been killed and her son had just blown up and gone on his first tour. When I returned home, she said, ‘Son, I can’t live in this house by myself. We’re going to have to figure something out.’
Lil Wayne’s poignant remarks shed light on the challenges and sacrifices he faced on his journey to success, resonating deeply with those in attendance and reaffirming the enduring impact of his remarkable career.
