Connor McCaffery, the boyfriend of Caitlin Clark, supports the idea of the Indiana Fever making a bold move to help out the star rookie.

Opposing defenses have been getting notably physical against Caitlin Clark during her rookie year, but things went a little too far during the Fever-Chicago Sky contest on Saturday afternoon.

During the third quarter of Indiana’s home tilt with Chicago, Chennedy Carter delivered an unnecessary cheap shot to Clark after making a basket. Though Carter was only issued a foul on the court, the WNBA later reviewed it and upgraded the hit to a flagrant foul.

Here’s an extended look at the Caitlin Clark – Chennedy Carter incident, there was more to it than the shoulder check and Clark was clearly talking to her on the way back up the floor from the prior basket by Indiana — CJ Fogler account may or may not be notable (@cjzero) June 1, 2024

Several fans noted that Connor McCaffery “liked” several tweets that called for the Fever to protect Clark by signing the WNBA’s “version of James Johnson”, who plays for the NBA’s Indiana Pacers:

Fever need to sign the wnba version of James Johnson – kyle (@knicks_tape99)

Idk who the James Johnson of the WNBA is but whoever it is the Fever need to get them asap — Matt (@sixringsofsteeI).

Tyrese had a finger laid on him once and the Pacers called up James Johnson.

The Fever gotta call up somebody to take care of business 😭— AKRiley (@AKRileyy5)

In the NBA, it’s almost impossible to get away with the type of clear-cut physical contact that opposing teams are doing on Clark. So it’s largely on the WNBA and its officials to do a better job of enforcing the rules, because no player should be taking as many hits and cheap shots like this.

Clark and the Fever got the last laugh against Chicago by squeaking out a 71-70 victory. It marked the end of their three-game losing skid as well as the Fever’s first home win of the season.

Caitlin Clark Definitely Needs More Support

In terms of scoring, it’s fairly obvious that the Fever need to get more support for Caitlin Clark if they’re to compete for a playoff berth.

But if opposing teams are going to continue getting away with physical contact on Clark, that should further motivate the Fever to bring in some more size to help their franchise star. There’s just no way the Fever can expect to succeed if Clark is going to be the target of such cheap shots.
