At just 25 years old, Paris McGowan has already made history. The recent graduate from Motorcycle Mechanics Institute (MMI) in Orlando has become Missouri’s first Black female Harley-Davidson® technician, a remarkable achievement that stands as a testament to her dedication, passion, and perseverance. Paris’s journey from motorcycle enthusiast to trailblazer in a male-dominated industry is nothing short of inspiring.
Growing up, Paris was surrounded by a family deeply passionate about Harley-Davidson motorcycles. This familial love for the iconic brand sparked her own interest in bikes from a young age. “I was always fascinated by the power and beauty of Harley-Davidson motorcycles,” Paris recalls. “There was something about the sound of the engine and the sense of freedom they represented that captivated me.”
Despite her enthusiasm, Paris initially never considered a career in motorcycle mechanics. The industry is notoriously male-dominated, and the lack of visible role models who looked like her made the path seem even more daunting. However, her family’s unwavering support and encouragement fueled her desire to pursue her passion. “My family believed in me, even when I had doubts. They were my biggest cheerleaders,” she says.
Paris’s time at MMI was not without its challenges. She often found herself as one of the few women in her classes, let alone the only Black woman. “There were moments of doubt and isolation,” she admits. “But I knew I was paving the way for others who might come after me. That kept me going.”
Her perseverance paid off. Upon graduation, Paris secured a position as a Harley-Davidson technician in Missouri, making history in the process. Her achievement is a significant milestone, not just for her but for the industry as a whole. It highlights the importance of diversity and representation in fields traditionally dominated by men.
Paris’s groundbreaking accomplishment has garnered attention and praise from various quarters. Her story has become a source of inspiration for many young women and aspiring technicians. “I want to show other women, especially women of color, that they can succeed in this field. It’s not just a man’s world,” she asserts.
In her role as a Harley-Davidson technician, Paris performs a wide range of tasks, from routine maintenance to complex repairs. Her expertise and attention to detail have quickly earned her a reputation for excellence. “I love what I do,” she says. “Every day is a new challenge, and I get to work with these incredible machines.”
Looking ahead, Paris is committed to furthering her skills and knowledge. She hopes to eventually open her own motorcycle repair shop, creating a welcoming space for all enthusiasts, regardless of gender or background. “I want to continue breaking barriers and set an example for future generations,” she states.
Paris McGowan’s journey is a powerful reminder of the impact of passion, perseverance, and support. Her story underscores the importance of following one’s dreams, even when the path seems uncertain. As Missouri’s first Black female Harley-Davidson technician, Paris has not only made history but also paved the way for others to follow in her footsteps.
In an industry that still has a long way to go in terms of diversity and inclusion, Paris’s achievement is a beacon of hope and progress. Her trailblazing journey from a motorcycle enthusiast to a respected technician is a testament to what can be accomplished with determination and courage. Paris McGowan is not just a remarkable technician; she is a role model and a pioneer, inspiring countless others to pursue their passions and break down barriers.
