Lionel Messi Tops List of Most Famous Athletes in the USA in Q4
Lionel Messi, the Argentine football sensation, has made history in American sports culture by being recognized as the most famous athlete in the United States during the fourth quarter of last year.
According to SSRS, a sports research company, Messi has risen to become the number one most famous athlete in the USA. This marks the first time in 30 years, since SSRS began collecting data, that a soccer player has topped the list of most beloved athletes in the country.
The winner of the 2022 World Cup was identified through data collected in the fourth quarter of 2023 (from September to December). Other sports superstars like Michael Jordan, Steph Curry, LeBron James (basketball), Tiger Woods (golf), Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady (football) have also previously held this honor.
Thanks to the Messi effect, Inter Miami has swiftly ascended to become the most popular Major League Soccer (MLS) club in the USA in the fourth quarter, according to the same website. They surpassed LA Galaxy, the former club of David Beckham, in popularity.
In another study by Sportico, only four MLS teams have reached a value of $1 billion. Apart from Inter Miami, the other three teams are Los Angeles FC ($1.15 billion), Atlanta United ($1.05 billion), and LA Galaxy ($1 billion).
No team compares to Inter Miami in terms of growth over the past year. Inter Miami’s value has increased by 74% in a short period.
Messi’s presence has opened a new chapter for Inter Miami. Within weeks of his arrival, Inter Miami celebrated their historic victory in the Leagues Cup. They also reached the US Open Cup final before losing to the Houston Dynamo.
Inter Miami kicked off the new season with a 2-0 win over Real Salt Lake on February 22nd. Messi personally contributed to both goals and was awarded a rating of 7.8 by SofaScore – the highest in the match.
