LSU’s Angel Reese blows a kiss after being selected seventh overall by the Chicago SkyAP

Angel Reese has been playing at an exceptional level, making a strong case for Rookie of the Year. The 7th overall pick and National Champion with LSU has been outstanding through six games this season.

Formerly known as “Chi-town Barbie” and “Bayou Barbie” in college, nicknames that reflected her on-court talent and vibrant personality, Reese is now embracing a new moniker: “League Barbie.” This new nickname may not instill fear, but as long as Reese continues to put up impressive stats and lead her team to victory, it will establish itself in the league.

In her most recent game, Reese had the worst performance of her young career against fellow rookie Cameron Brink. Despite her 6 points and 6 rebounds in 25 minutes, the Chicago Sky secured an 83-73 victory. Brink had a similarly mediocre game with just 7 points and 6 rebounds. These two, along with Caitlin Clark, are locked in an epic battle for the Rookie of the Year award.

Reese is averaging 11 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in 28 minutes of play. Standing at 6 feet 3 inches, she leads her team in rebounding and has shown rapid maturation and understanding of the game. Her next game is against none other than Caitlin Clark.

The Chicago Sky will travel to Indiana for the first WNBA matchup between these two standout rookies, though their teams are on different trajectories. In their previous five meetings in college, Reese holds a 4-1 advantage over Clark, including a win in the National Championship in 2023 and the only loss in the Elite Eight matchup between the Hawkeyes and Tigers early this year. Clark has better overall numbers except in rebounds, for obvious reasons.

In this upcoming game, Reese appears to have the edge, but Clark will be eager to secure her second win of the season and undoubtedly has a chip on her shoulder when playing against her “rival,” the League Barbie. The game will be the only WNBA matchup tomorrow at 11:00 AM ET, broadcast on ESPN and WNBA League Pass.
