One of Caitlin Clark’s former teammates has retired due to medical reasons. Ava Jones, who was severely injured in a 2022 car accident, has abruptly ended her career.

In 2022, an impaired driver veered onto the sidewalk where Ava and her parents were walking to attend an AAU basketball tournament. The driver struck Ava, her father Trey, and her mother Amy. Ava suffered a traumatic brain injury, torn ligaments in her knees and a shoulder injury. Tragically, Trey succumbed to his injuries in the hospital a few days later, while her mother, Amy, sustained a brain injury and 21 broken bones. Ava’s younger brother, Creek, was able to avoid serious injury.

Only four months after the tragedy, Ava announced her commitment to the Iowa Hawkeyes. Iowa has spent the last few years helping her recover from the severe injuries she sustained.

Despite Ava’s determined efforts toward recovery over the past years, she has decided to medically retire from college basketball as a result of that tragic day.

“I would like to start by saying how grateful I am to have been part of the Iowa women’s basketball program,” Jones said on social media. “It is with great sadness to announce that I am medically retiring from college basketball.

“My coaches, doctors, teammates and trainers have been amazing since the accident. While I will no longer be a member of the women’s basketball program, I will still be on scholarship, receive a world-class education and forever be a Hawkeye.

“I’d like to thank my family for the never-ending support and I am excited for the next chapter of my life.”

The driver responsible for the accident, Michael Hurley, faced multiple charges, including one count of murder, two counts of first-degree assault, one count of fourth-degree assault, and one count of operating a motor vehicle under the influence.

Hurley admitted to taking the opioid hydrocodone before driving, according to the police report.

Fans, meanwhile, wish Ava nothing but the best moving forward, while others are certainly devastated over what happened.

Good luck, Ava. We wish you nothing but the best moving forward.
