Mikaela Mayer has some tough decisions to make. The American boxer has been in turmoil ever since dropping a close fight with Natasha Jonas and is now supposedly disappointed with her team about how it has handled her recent career decisions. Given recent results, it seems it’s high time for Mayer to consider some changes in her team.

Mayer, 33, went toe-to-toe with Jonas as the latter put her IBF welterweight title on the line. However, Mayer came languishingly close as she lost a split decision in Liverpool on January 20 this year. But the inclusion of a unilateral rematch clause only for Jonas seized eyeballs, as it was an unusual choice by her team. In an impudent move, Mayer’s team accepted the clause which ended up working against her. Moreover, Hall of Famer Tim Bradley had also blasted Mayer’s team on air for stranding her unprotected.

Not only did the Los Angeles native’s team’s indecisiveness cost her an immediate rematch, but it might also have spoiled her 2024 plans. Mayer turned to her X handle and wrote, “I’ve had the same team my entire career. I’m loyal to the bone but I have boundaries & they’ve been crossed.” This suggests a major reshuffle in the former super featherweight’s inner team.

Notably, The Ring and Dan Rafael also reported that Mayer and Jonas were negotiating a June 15 timeline for their rematch, but now that is also off the shelves. While the reason for the fight’s fallout is not known to the public, the 19-2 record holder’s tweet might drop a hint. So where does it leave Mayer?

Will Mikaela Mayer make drastic changes to her team before she decides on her next opponent? It remains to be seen. But currently, she is not short of suitors for her next challenge.

Mikaela Mayer: chasing a title shot

Mayer, in her post-fight interview after the Jonas fight, had expressed her disappointment and further hoped for another title shot. The welterweight boxer had announced, “It’s disappointing. But what am I going to do? I Just hope that Natasha will be the stand-up champ that she is and give me another shot.”

While Jonas was open to the rematch, she didn’t agree on the timeline. Meanwhile, The Ring has disclosed that Mayer is also in talks with another champion and is targeting the WBO welterweight title holder Sandy Ryan. The Briton recently brushed aside Terri Harper with ease this March and is keen on a quick return to the ring. Mayer has started the trash-talking to build up the fight and it might not be far from materializing it.
