HOWELL, MI — Howell has taken home the title of having the Best Main Street in the United States, according to USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.

The list was based on nominations from an expert panel which were then voted on by readers in the U.S. Howell, in Livingston County, is No. 1 and the only city from Michigan to earn a spot this year.

The ranking describes its list of 10 cities across the country as “charming” and places that are not only “living history,” but offer a “vibrant culture.”

The city’s Grand River Avenue has a lot to offer with plenty of walkable restaurants, bakeries, boutiques, pubs and even a historic move theater.

“Grand River Avenue, the main street in Howell, is home to numerous historic buildings that now house a variety of unique shops and local eateries,” the ranking states.

Beyond businesses, Howell’s downtown area has become known as a destination for a handful of events including music performances, the city’s farmer’s market and its annual Melon Fest.

The last time the city was in the running for this contest was in 2016 when it took home second place, according to Howell Main Street.
