One of the world’s most influential and beloved singers, Katy Perry, has responded to controversial comments made by Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker last month.
On May 11, Butker made headlines with his commencement speech at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, where he made remarks that were widely criticized as homophobic, antisemitic, misogynistic, and sexist, including advising graduating female students to become “homemakers.”
Three weeks later, Perry reacted by sharing an edited Instagram video of Butker’s speech. The video carried a strong message for women and the LGBTQ+ community, with Perry captioning it, “fixed this for my girls, my graduates, and my gays — you can do anything, congratulations and happy pride 🏳️🌈🏳️⚧️ 🧡”. The edited speech celebrated women’s potential for successful careers. Perry’s video quickly gained traction, amassing over 146,000 likes.
Butker’s comments have led to significant public backlash, including calls for the Chiefs to release him. A Change.org petition demanding his removal has garnered over 228,000 signatures since May 13.
Despite the controversy, the Kansas City Chiefs have no plans to reprimand Butker. While quarterback Patrick Mahomes expressed disagreement with some of Butker’s statements, he defended Butker’s character. Head coach Andy Reid avoided the controversy, emphasizing Butker’s freedom of speech. Butker has stood by his remarks, indicating that he and the Chiefs are ready for any ongoing criticism.
