The Kansas City Chiefs are considering removing kicker Harrison Butker from kickoff duties this season. Special Teams Coordinator Dave Toub discussed the idea with other coaches, believing it would be beneficial following a major kickoff rule change.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Toub revealed that watching XFL games influenced their decision. “We watched every XFL play. Kickers were involved in probably at least 25 to 40% of the tackles,” Toub noted.

The new rule, reported by Yahoo Sports’ Jori Epstein, requires any ball kicked into the ‘landing zone’ (from the goal line to the 20-yard line) to be returned, effectively eliminating fair catches. This increases the risk for kickers like Butker, who aren’t equipped for frequent collisions.

To mitigate this risk, the Chiefs are considering using another player, such as safety Justin Reid, for kickoffs instead of Butker. This decision is unrelated to Butker’s controversial statements in May.
