Angel Reese scored 13 points in the Chicago Sky’s victory over the New York Liberty – and her celebrations on the bench were as contagious as her tenacity on the court
Angel Reese addressed her critics after the Chicago Sky easily defeated the New York Liberty in the preseason this week. She wrote “maximize them 24hrs” on X immediately after Tuesday’s game.
The message directly responded to critics who questioned her attendance at the Met Gala on Monday, considering the Sky’s ongoing preseason training camp. Having just celebrated her 22nd birthday and fulfilled a lifelong dream of attending the prestigious event, Reese clarified that her aspirations extend beyond basketball and that seizing every opportunity is paramount.
Under the guidance of coach Teresa Weatherspoon, the Sky launched a calculated shooting display on Tuesday, storming out to a commanding 13-0 lead over New York. While guards Dana Evans and Marina Mabrey provided the brunt of the offense, Reese’s tenacity and hustle were evident throughout the contest.
Reese’s dedication to the game was easily detectable on the court. She secured her spot on the scoresheet by capitalizing on opportunities near the basket. Her relentless effort led to 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting, five rebounds, two steals, and an assist.
The newly coined “Chi-Town Barbie” stood out in the third quarter, showcasing her individual skills and highlighting her impact on the team’s dynamics. Her backdown bucket over two-time league MVP Breanna Stewart and the subsequent steal and accurate outlet pass for an easy layup extended their lead to 65-36, igniting optimism among Sky fans.
The Sky rookie’s enthusiasm was evident throughout the game, even from the sidelines. In one particular play, she leaped to her feet after her teammate sank a 3-pointer, praising the moment with a special celebration dance that the cameras were sure not to miss.
Cameras followed Reese’s interactions on the bench, where she appeared just as comfortable and animated as she did during her college days at LSU. In one memorable moment, Reese could be seen engaged in laughter and conversation with teammates Brianna Turner, Michaela Onyenwere, and injured Sky player Kamilla Cardoso, among others.
WNBA commentators remarked: “The Sky bench is a vibe” – highlighting Reese’s entertaining presence as she took a brief respite from the game’s action.
Chicago’s preseason campaign has seen split results, beginning with a defeat against the Reese’s infectious positivity in their inaugural match of the year. The Sky are preparing for their first regular-season encounter on May 15th, slated as an away game against the Dallas Wings.
